Prescription Drugs

by Tom Sawyer

Are you aware?

When the medicine is dispensed at the Vets office you have incurred the extra cost for the Vet stocking the drug or product and possibly a significant dispensing fee. In some cases the Vet may have purchased the medicine at a much higher price than what might be available today.

Examples:

1) One of my invoices reflected Griseofulvin 250mg 21ea tablets = $68.25 that works out to $3.25 per tablet! Later I found with a regular prescription I could get Griseofulvin 250mg tablets @ $1.42/tablet.

2) A review of previous purchases from the Vet reflected Malaseb Shampoo = $21.98 that worked out to $2.73 per oz. I found this available @ $1.16/oz

3) I was charged $26.75 @$4.46/oz. for Dermcaps Liquid. However, it could be purchased elsewhere for $2.71/oz.

4) At another Vet one of my Kerries was dispensed eye drops with a label covering the original bottle and we were charged $20.00. After removing the label I found the exact same eye drops were available for $3.65.

On-Line Vet Pharmacies

Numerous web sites are available to provide reduced prices on drugs. Entering the drug name in your search engine will initiate a list for you to review. Check multiple sites as prices differ greatly.

A prescription from your vet will be required on Rx drugs.  Many sites will obtain the prescription directly from your vet if you provide the applicable information.

Without recommending any specific site, here are three sample sites:
