If you suspect that your Kerry has ingested a poisonous plant,
you need to act fast. Symptoms range from indigestion, irritation
of the mouth, abnormal thirst, drowsiness, depression (or excitement),
drooling, difficulty breathing, to staggering, loss of coordination,
tremors, seizures, collapse, asphyxiation, heart failure, and
possible death.
It goes without saying that you need to contact a veterinarian
immediately. But what if you can't reach a vet? Fortunately, the
National Animal Poison Control Center (NAPCC) provides a 24-hour
emergency hotline. Keep these numbers handy:
800-548-2423
(You are charged a flat fee of $30.)
900-680-0000
(You are charged $2.95 a minute up to $30.)
If the dog is alert, you may be asked to induce vomiting. However,
in some poisoning cases, it is not recommended. That's why you
need prompt veterinary help.
