What is KB-L?
*******************************************************************

KB-L (KB-L) is a free internet newsgroup.

KB-L is intended to be a friendly forum to exchange all kinds of
information about Kerry Blue Terriers and their lives with people.

Serious as well as light-hearted topics are welcome. Anything that has
to do with Kerry Blue Terriers may be discussed here, such as
conformation, temperament, training, obedience, agility, health issues,
grooming, public perception, brags, etc.

Anyone who has an interest in the breed can join Kerry Blues-L. Kerry
owners from around the world are welcome. Posts need not be in English.

KB-L exists to serve its subscribers and their Kerries.

KB-L is not affiliated with any Kerry Club, but is part of the services
of the Kery Blue Terreir Foundation.

they not want their posts reproduced. This list may not be mirrored at

How is KB-L Run?
*******************************************************************

This list is hosted by L-Soft International. There is no charge for
subscribing to the list.

The distribution of all the messages is handled by a software program
called Listserv.

The principle owner of this list is John Van den Bergh
(johnv@kerryblues.info). Please e-mail him privately if you have any
questions or comments about the list or if you need help with your
subscription.

*******************************************************************
KB-L Roster
*******************************************************************

When you subscribe to KB-L, we ask that you send a small message
to the list to tell the other subscribers a little bit about
yourself--of course, this is completely optional. The information in
your introduction will be used to compile a Roster of KB-L
members which will be posted on the Kerry Blue web site, unless your
request that your introduction not be included. The Roster is for your
use only and may not be used for commercial purposes.

Some of the things you may want to include in your introduction are:

* Your real name
* Your Internet address
* Location (state/province/country)
* Kennel name, if any
* Years in Kerry Blues (or other breeds)
* Breed club affiliations/offices held
* For each dog currently owned:
  -- Call name
  -- Registered name, including titles
  -- Gender
  -- Birth date (not age)
-- Breed (if other than Kerry Blue)
* Interests (conformation/obedience/herding/rescue/agility, etc.)
* Additional information: anything else you'd like to add

Please e-mail this information to KerryBlues-L@apple.ease.lsoft.com with "New
Member" in the subject area. Soon you will be chatting with Kerry Blue
lovers from all over the world!

We have made some extra effort in blocking commercial access to the
roster, however the owner can't guarantee that the roster or the
subscriber list will never fall in commercial hands.

Kerry Blue Terrier Web Site
*******************************************************************

The Kerry Blue Web Site contains the largest collection of Kerry Blue
information ever assembled.

It contains over one thousand articles and pictures. It is ideal for
novices and seasoned breeders to find the information they need. It has
sections on training, breeding, puppies and history.

It provides entertaining stories about living with Kerries.

It includes several articles on grooming.

The reference sections covers lists of all the Kerry Clubs of the world,
several hundred breeders from all over the globe and valuable rescue
contacts.

Breeders might be interested in the sample puppy contracts. Puppy
buyers will be interested in the techniques provided to find a good
breeder.

Kerry rescue is fostered by providing rescue techniques and sample
contracts and questionnaires.

The Kerry Web Site is:
http://www.kerryblues.info/
(Note: must be in lower case letters)

*******************************************************************
General Netiquette
*******************************************************************

Absolutely anything that has something to do with Kerry Blues may be
discussed, such as conformation, temperament, obedience, herding,
agility, health issues, brags, friendly chat, etc.

* This list, however, is NOT a place for rude comments (flames),
comments about specific judges, or blatant commercials.

* This list has zero tolerance for flames, bashers, and baiters. Bashers of
the Foundation and Kerry clubs will be put on immediate review. Baiters-
-people who post enticing messages fomenting divisiveness and dissension-
-will be put on immediate review as well.

* This list allows the advertising of your own Kerry Blue litters and
rescue dogs. Any posting that advertises or recommends breeders outside
this list is not appropriate. Requests to locate a breeder are allowed.

* While brags are allowed, please be considerate to most other
subscribers who may not be as interested as you are. If you believe that
you have an exceptional personal reason to brag, feel free to do so.
Congratulations in response to brags should be sent via private e-mail.

* Cross postings from other lists are allowed, as long as the topic
relates to Kerry Blues.

* The list does not allow advertising by vendors. However, if a
subscriber, not associated with a vendor, is a happy customer and wants to
pass along information, by all means post it.

* When replying to this list, please remember to sign your message with
your real name, e-mail address, and state, province, or country in which
you live. This is for the convenience of people who wish to reply to
you privately.

* Keep your subject headers appropriate to the topic discussed. Change
the subject header if your reply drifts from the original topic.

* Be aware that there may be individuals from countries other than your
own. Try to be sensitive to cultural differences and forgiving to those
for whom English is not a first language.

* Long posts should have "(long)" included in the subject.

* Personal attacks (flames) directed toward anyone on or off the list
are not allowed. Personal attacks on subscribers via private e-mail is not
allowed either. Any persistent flaming that occurs may result in the
involuntary signoff of subscriber(s) responsible. By continuing your
subscription to the list, you agree to allow the list owner or L-Soft
to delete you from the list should they decide your behavior on
the list is inappropriate.

* Personal messages should not be sent to a list.

* Rescue activities are strongly encouraged and posts about Kerries
requiring assistance are welcome.

* Do not transmit photo files or attachments through KB-L. If you have a
picture you wish to share with list members, post an announcement about
it (asking for private replies) and send it to respondents privately, or
send it to me (johnv@kerryblues.info) for posting on the KB web site.

* Send your mail in "text only" format since some members may not have
GUI based readers.

* Please keep in mind that this list is made possible through donated
time and services. It exists as a direct result of the efforts of real
people willing to volunteer their time and energy.

* Finally, be kind, have fun and enjoy!

*******************************************************************
Puppy Searches / Litter Announcements
*******************************************************************

KB-L is not intended to be a puppy matchmaking service. Please
limit litter announcements or requests for aid in finding Kerry Blues
and move discussions to private e-mail once contact is made. The list
owners are the final arbiters of what are appropriate posts to the list.

Getting a pet from a responsible breeder is an important first step
toward responsible pet ownership. Do not assume that because you have
connected with a breeder through KB-L that you have connected
with a responsible breeder. KB-L does not endorse any
particular breeders.

Information on the breed, Kerry breeders or Kerry Clubs can all be found
at the Kerry Blue Web Site:
http://www.kerryblues.info/

Your local Kerry club may also be a good source for locating breeders.

Ultimately, it is the buyer's challenge and duty to get their new Kerry
from a responsible source with whom they can communicate comfortably.

A Message from the Lawyers
*******************************************************************

Please make sure you also read L-Soft's Mailing List Rules at
the end of this message.

By continuing to receive messages from KerryBlues-L@apple.ease.lsoft.com, you
agree to hold John Van den Bergh, Daryl Enstone, and L-Soft International,
harmless for opinions expressed on this mailing list. The opinions
expressed in this unmoderated mailing list do not necessarily reflect
the opinions of the list administrators.

If you cannot accept these terms, unsubscribe NOW by sending an e-mail
message to:
listserv@apple.ease.lsoft.com
with a blank subject line and
UNSUB KerryBlues-L
in the message body.

*******************************************************************
Listserv Housekeeping
*******************************************************************

Listserv is a computer program provided free of charge by L-Soft
to Kerry-Blues-L. It performs the routing and some of the
administrative chores of the list.

If you are familiar with Listserv commands, you can skip this section.

Note to AOL subscribers:
Listserv wants blank subject lines and AOL does not allow blank subject
lines. Therefore, just put a "-" in the AOL subject line.

Note to MS Exchange Users:
Your mail to KB-L must be in "text only" format since some
members may not have GUI based readers. So if you use Microsoft
Exchange, set the properties for the list's address in your "Personal
Address Book" so that you DO NOT send mail in "Microsoft Exchange Rich
Text Format." To do this, double click on the address and unclick the
box that says "Always Send To This Recipient In Microsoft Exchange Rich
Text Format." This will help eliminate the WINMAIL.DAT file garbage
that sometimes appears at the end of messages. Also, don't use bold or
italics or any other fancy formatting as this seems to result in "Rich
Text Format" being automatically turned back on.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Addresses Associated with KB-L

Before sending any message, make sure that you are using the correct
address. There are three addresses associated with the KB-L
mailing list:

A. listserv@apple.ease.lsoft.com

This address should be used to handle subscriptions (getting on and
leaving the list) and will automatically process commands sent to it. Do
*NOT* send questions that you expect a person to read to the listserv
address. This is simply a piece of software and software doesn't
understand anything other than a few commands. Do *NOT* include a
"signature" at the end of e-mail to Listserv.

B. KerryBlues-L@apple.ease.lsoft.com

This address should be used to send messages that you want distributed
to all readers of the list. Don't use this address to request to be
removed from the list. Use listserv@apple.ease.lsoft.com when you want to
change list options or when you want to be removed from the list.

C. johnv@kerryblues.info

This is the personal address for the list owner. If you are having
difficulty with your subscription or have questions or comments about
this list, drop me a line and I'll do my best to address your concerns.

If I don't respond in a few days, please resend your message to Daryl
Enstone (denstone@sciborg.uwaterloo.ca).

----------------------------------------------------------------------
2. How do I SUBSCRIBE to KB-L?

There is a two-step procedure for subscribing to the mailing list. This
is to prevent anyone with a forged mailing address from
signing onto the list. So don't try to subscribe
president@whitehouse.gov; I doubt if he's interested in Kerries.

*** STEP ONE: ***

Send an e-mail message to: listserv@apple.ease.lsoft.com

with a blank subject line and the following command as the first (and
only) line of the message body:

SUBSCRIBE KerryBlues-L Your Name

Substitute your real full name (e.g., "Joe Smith") for "Your Name" above
(e.g., SUBSCRIBE KerryBlues-L Joe Smith). You must provide at least two
words.

*** STEP TWO: ***

You will receive a detailed message back from listserv telling you
exactly what to do to complete the process. All you need to do is to
indicate to your mail software that you want to reply to this message,
and then type "OK". Don't quote the body of the message in your reply--
we just need the "OK." You have only 48 hours to reply to the message.

If you have any problems with this process, send a message to
johnv@kerryblues.info and I will try to help you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
3. How do I UNSUBSCRIBE from KB-L?

Send an e-mail message to:

listserv@apple.ease.lsoft.com

with a blank subject line and the following command as the first (and
only) line of the message body:

UNSUB KerryBlues-L

You will receive a FAREWELL message back from LISTSERV. Please consider
letting us know how we can improve this list.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
4. How do I POST?

To send, or post, a message on KB-L so that it will be seen by
all subscribers:

Send an e-mail message to:

KerryBlues-L@apple.ease.lsoft.com

This is just as though you were sending a message to another person.
Since you are one of the people who is subscribed to the list, you will
not receive a copy of the message that you sent, but only an
acknowledgment that your message was distributed.

If you want to receive a copy of your own messages, send an e-mail
message to:

listserv@apple.ease.lsoft.com

with a blank subject line and the following command as the first (and
only) line of the message body:

SET KerryBlues-L REPRO

and to turn it back off:

SET KerryBlues-L NOREPRO

----------------------------------------------------------------------
5. How do I POSTPONE my mail while I'm on vacation?

From time to time you may find it convenient to halt the flow of
incoming KB-L mail without giving up your subscription to the
list.

To halt the flow of incoming KB-L e-mail, send a message to:

listserv@apple.ease.lsoft.com

with a blank subject line and the following command as the first (and
only) line of the message body:

SET KerryBlues-L NOMAIL

To restore incoming KB-L mail service, repeat the above
procedure but instead send the command:

SET KerryBlues-L MAIL

----------------------------------------------------------------------
6. I'm drowning. How do I REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF MAIL?

There are three ways to cut down on KB-L e-mail without missing anything.

Fist: DIGEST
You can choose to receive once-a-day digests from KB-L
containing all the individual postings that were made that day. In
other words, you will receive one big post instead of many small ones.

To select the DIGEST option for KB-L, send e-mail to:

listserv@apple.ease.lsoft.com

with a blank subject line and the following command as the first (and
only) line of the message body:

SET KerryBlues-L DIG

To deactivate this option and once again receive each individual
KB-L posting as a separate, individual piece of incoming e-mail,
proceed as above but send the command:

SET KerryBlues-L NODIG

(An appropriate command for a Terrier!)

Second: INDEX
With the INDEX feature you only receive a list of subject headings,
once each day. You can select the subjects you want to read. KB-L
will then send you only those messages you request.

To select the INDEX option for KB-L, send e-mail to:

listserv@apple.ease.lsoft.com

with a blank subject line and the following command as the first (and
only) line of the message body:

SET KerryBlues-L INDEX

To deactivate this option and once again receive each individual
KB-L posting as a separate, individual piece of incoming e-mail,
proceed as above but send the command:

SET KerryBlues-L MAIL

Third: NOMAIL
You can stop all KB-L mail (see #5 above) and use the web site interface.
KB-L messages are archived. Go to the KB web site and select "KB-L" ,
then "Archives"
At the first visit, you will be asked for a password. You must set up a
password. Only KB-L subscribers can set up a password. Follow the
instructions. Then log out.
Check your e-mail and confirm your password via e-mail.
The second time you visit the KB-L archives, you will be asked for the password.
Enter your password and save it in a coockie for future reference.
The third time you visit the archives, you will not be asked for a password.
It's worth going through this proceedures to gain access to the archives.
All messages are indexed and you can search for any topic.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
7. How can I find out WHO IS ON THE LIST?

A directory of Kerry Blue people an subscribers with e-mail addresses is
available from the Kerry Blue Web Site, in the Resource section.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Suppose I want to go back in time and GET A MESSAGE THAT I
MISSED-- is this possible?

Yes! If you miss a post, or a digest, or you are a new subscriber and
would like to read the old threads from the past 6 months, you can
retrieve archives of the old KB-L posts.

Send a message to:

listserv@apple.ease.lsoft.com

with a blank subject line and the following command as the first (and
only) line of the message body:

GET KB-L LOGyymmx

where "yy" is the year (e.g., 95),
"mm" is the month (e.g., 08),
and "x" represents which week during a particular month you are
requesting ('a' for the first week, 'b' for the second, etc.).

For example,
GET KB-L LOG9608c
will get you the archive for the third week in August, 1996.

An easier way is to go to the Archives on the KB web site.
Follow the instruction in item 6 above.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
9. How do I change my Address?

When you change your e-mail address, you have to UNSUBSCRIBE from your
old address (Section 3) and subscribe from your new address (Section 2).
