Intelligent or what!By John Van den Bergh, based on reports from Barry O'Brien, sfobr@indigo.ie In the US we have "trivia bars" where individuals or teams compete over the knowledge of useless facts. In Ireland these contests are called a "Pub Quiz". These general knowledge competitions are organised by the local pub. They invite teams of four competitors to compete every week during a time when business would normally be slack. If they get about 20 contestants and their supporters it soon gets business going. Points are awarded depending on how difficult the questions are and the
winning team gets a couple of Barry O'Brien has a Kerry bitch, called Tipsy, which he regularly takes to his favorite pub in Passage West (County Cork, just 6 miles south of Cork city.) This pub ran a "Pub Quiz" for teams of four contestants to be picked from five submitted names (i.e. a "sub" was allowed). The competition ran for six weeks but Barry's team had only a total of three people. Tipsy, a most intelligent Kerry, was put in as the sub and attended each quiz session. One of the questions, valued at 2 points, was "What is the capital of Greenland?" Another one was "Who painted the famous painting 'The Anatomy Lesson'? That was worth 4 points. Well, Barry's team won and Tipsy collected her trophy with the rest of the team.
