Puppy Teething Adventureby Sharon Block, sblock@dresources.com Our Kerry Blue puppy entered our family when she and I were about the same age, adjusted for the difference in species, that is (she was three months; I was three years). As one might imagine, there was a variety of toys lying around that both Heather and I liked to play with. One night at dinner, Heather came up to my mother with my bright red rubber ball in her mouth. Of course, my mother tried to send her away, under the no-begging rule. But Heather just sat at the side of mom's chair, whining faintly. My mother, trained by three children to be able to interpret whines, squeals, and other signals of distress among pre-verbals, looked again, and realized that poor Heather had sunk her sharp puppy teeth all the way into the rubber ball, and couldn't get them out! A little poking and prying did the trick, and Heather was soon good as new, though she preferred socks, bones, and sticks as toys for the remainder of her long life.
